Ado Hamelryck (Halle, November 2, 1941–Genk, October 5, 2024) was a visual artist exploring the spectrum of dark hues. This decision is crucial in his quest for unadulterated imagery and refinement. He cultivated an entirely own character in his methodology—both physically and symbolically. The application of the black paint, ink, or substance was executed by repeated, rhythmic, and contemplative activities. Meaningless letters or symbols occupy the space. Through an extensive sequence of actions, a pristine image materializes; the artwork, and the previously meaningless, becomes significance.

Ado Hamelryck pursued his education at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels and the National Higher Institute for Fine Arts in Antwerp. In 1967, he relocated to Genk and assumed a teaching position at the newly founded SHIVKV (Municipal Higher Institute for Visual Communication and Design). Until his retirement, Ado Hamelryck instructed many generations of painters and graphic designers in figure drawing.

Ado Hamelryck’s artistic curriculum vitae encompasses solo exhibitions in Brussels (BOZAR, Atelier 340), Antwerp (I.C.C., Galerij XXI), Ghent (Association for the Museum of Contemporary Art), Liège (Musée d’Art Moderne), Hasselt (Provincial Museum, CIAP, ccHA), Genk (FLACC, C-mine), Lanaken, Amsterdam (Brakke Grond), The Hague, and Maastricht, among others, in addition to a multitude of group exhibitions both nationally and internationally. Numerous books exist, including ‘Art in Belgium after 1945’ by Karel Geirlandt and the 2011 monograph ‘Not one black, but twenty-seven blacks, I guarantee you.’

Ado Hamelryck received several accolades, including distinction at the Prix Jeune Peinture Belge in 1961 and 1962, encouragement from the Flemish Community in 1986, and the title of knight in the Order of Leopold II in 1988. He has the position of honorary lecturer at the LUCA School of Arts.

His oeuvre is part of the collections of MuZEE Ostend, M HKA, the University of Antwerp, the Province of Limburg, the Flemish Community, the French Community, the National Bank of Brussels, KBC, and several individual collectors.

HAMELRYCK ART vzw was established in 2023 by Arend Hamelryck and his spouse Diana Zaat. The non-profit organization is compiling a comprehensive inventory of all works of Ado Hamelryck and intends to delineate his career as a professional visual artist. Through this initiative, HAMELRYCK ART vzw seeks to preserve the comprehensive body of work of this artist for posterity.

Ado Hamelryck is represented by Gallery Sofie Van den Bussche in Brussels and Uitstalling Art Gallery in Genk.

Ado Hamelryck (Halle, 2 november 1941 – Genk, 5 oktober 2024) was een beeldend kunstenaar op zoek naar alle kleuren zwart. Deze keuze was essentieel in zijn streven naar zuivere beelden en purificatie. Hij ontwikkelde in zijn manier van werken een geheel eigen signatuur – letterlijk en figuurlijk. Want het aanbrengen van de zwarte verf, inkt of materie gebeurde via repetitieve, ritmische, meditatieve handelingen. Letters of tekens zonder betekenis vullen het vlak. Via een haast eindeloze reeks bewegingen ontstaat zo een zuiver beeld; het kunstwerk, en krijgt het zinloze zin.

Ado Hamelryck studeerde aan de Academie voor Schone Kunsten te Brussel en het Hoger Instituut voor Schone Kunsten te Antwerpen. In 1967 verhuisde hij naar Genk en werd er één van de docenten aan het pas opgerichte SHIVKV (Stedelijk Hoger Instituut voor Visuele Kommunikatie en Vormgeving). Tot aan zijn pensioen heeft Ado Hamelryck talrijke generaties kunstenaars en grafisch vormgevers opgeleid in (model)tekenen.

Het artistiek cv van Ado Hamelryck omvat solo tentoonstellingen in Brussel (BOZAR, Atelier 340), Antwerpen (I.C.C., Galerij XXI), Gent (Vereniging voor het Museum van Hedendaagse Kunst), Luik (Musée d’Art Moderne), Hasselt (Provinciaal Museum, CIAP, ccHA), Genk (FLACC, C-mine), Lanaken, Amsterdam (Brakke Grond), Den Haag, Maastricht, … alsook talrijke groepstentoonstellingen in binnen- en buitenland. Er zijn diverse publicaties zoals de vermelding in ‘Kunst in België na 1945’ van Karel Geirlandt en de monografie ‘Niet één zwart, maar zevenentwintig zwarten verzeker ik u’ uit 2011.

Ado Hamelryck won meerdere prijzen zoals onderscheiding bij de Prix Jeune Peinture Belge (1961 en 1962), aanmoediging door de Vlaamse Gemeenschap (1986) en ridder in de Orde van Leopold II (1988). Hij is ere-docent aan de LUCA School of Arts.

Zijn werk is onder meer opgenomen in de collectie van MuZEE Oostende, M HKA, Universiteit Antwerpen, Provincie Limburg, Vlaamse Gemeenschap, Franse Gemeenschap, Nationale Bank Brussel, KBC alsook bij menig privéverzamelaar.

In 2023 werd de HAMELRYCK ART vzw opgericht door zoon Arend Hamelryck en diens vrouw Diana Zaat. De vzw werkt aan een inventaris van alle werken van Ado Hamelryck en wil de carrière als professioneel beeldend kunstenaar in kaart brengen. Hiermee wil de HAMELRYCK ART vzw het omvangrijke oeuvre van deze kunstenaar veilig stellen voor de toekomst.

Ado Hamelryck wordt vertegenwoordigd door Gallery Sofie Van den Bussche in Brussel en Uitstalling Art Gallery in Genk.
