As part of the archival project dedicated to the oeuvre of Ado Hamelryck—supported by Flanders Arts Heritage, ECRU, and the City of Genk—the team decided to produce a documentary focusing on the artist’s life and work.
Film director Kaan Ilbas, who had already been involved in the research project, took on the direction of the film. Together with photographer Selma Gurbuz, he followed Ado Hamelryck from the very beginning of the process. They filmed him in his everyday environment: in his studio, while working, and in conversation with friends and fellow artists. The film captures not only his artistic practice, but also the person behind the work.
Following the passing of Ado Hamelryck in the autumn of 2024, the original concept of the film had to be adapted. The focus shifted to conversations with fellow artists and contemporaries, who shared their experiences, reflections, and memories of Hamelryck. These testimonies now form a central element of the documentary.
The result is a 22-minute biographical portrait, conceived in the spirit of the artist himself, with the artist’s home as a meaningful backdrop. The film stands as a restrained yet powerful homage to a rich and consistent artistic career.
The documentary premiered during the finissage of Ado Hamelryck’s exhibition at De Uitstalling Art Gallery in Genk on 2 May 2025. Since then, it has also been screened as part of the tribute exhibition Black is a Colour at Gallery Sofie Van den Bussche (21 July – 26 August 2025).
The documentary was made with the support of ECRU, the intermunicipal partnership for heritage and culture, and with the support of the City of Genk.

In het kader van het archiveringsproject rond het oeuvre van Ado Hamelryck, met steun van Kunstenerfgoed Vlaanderen, ECRU en de stad Genk, werd besloten om ook een documentaire te realiseren over het leven en werk van de kunstenaar.
Filmregisseur Kaan Ilbas, die al eerder betrokken was bij het onderzoeksproject, nam deze opdracht op zich. Samen met fotografe Selma Gurbuz volgde hij Ado Hamelryck van bij het begin van het traject. Ze filmden hem in zijn dagelijkse omgeving: in zijn atelier, tijdens het werken, en in gesprek met vrienden en collega-kunstenaars. De camera registreerde niet alleen zijn artistieke praktijk, maar ook de mens achter het oeuvre.
Na het overlijden van Ado Hamelryck in het najaar van 2024 moest het oorspronkelijke concept van de film noodgedwongen worden aangepast. De focus verschoof naar gesprekken met collega-kunstenaars en tijdgenoten, die hun ervaringen, inzichten en herinneringen aan Hamelryck deelden. Deze getuigenissen vormen vandaag een essentieel onderdeel van de film.
Het resultaat is een 22 minuten durende documentaire die een biografisch portret schetst in de geest van de kunstenaar zelf, met de kunstenaarswoning als betekenisvolle achtergrond. De film is opgevat als een ingetogen maar indringende hommage aan een rijk en consequent artistiek parcours.
De documentaire ging in première tijdens de finissage van Ado Hamelrycks tentoonstelling in De Uitstalling Art Gallery in Genk op 2 mei 2025. Sindsdien werd de film ook vertoond in het kader van de hommage-tentoonstelling Black is a colour bij galerie Sofie Van den Bussche (21 juli – 26 augustus 2025).
De documentaire kwam tot stand met de ondersteuning van ECRU, de intergemeentelijke samenwerking voor erfgoed en cultuur, en met de steun van stad Genk.
